British Values at Shevington Vale Primary School

At Shevington Vale Primary School, British Values are actively promoted through our curriculum, ethos and daily practice. We support pupils to develop into respectful, responsible and active citizens who contribute positively to school life and the wider communities of Appley Bridge and Wigan. In line with Prevent duty, staff are trained to challenge extremist views and recognise the risks of radicalisation.

Democracy

Pupils are encouraged to understand the importance of having a voice and participating in decision-making within a respectful and inclusive environment.

This is demonstrated through:

  • Young Governor elections and regular meetings
  • Planned opportunities for oracy and debate across the curriculum
  • Class discussions and shared decision-making
  • Pupil voice surveys relating to learning, safety and wellbeing

The Rule of Law

Clear expectations and consistent behaviour systems help create a safe and supportive learning environment. Pupils learn why rules and laws exist and how they protect individuals and communities.

This is demonstrated through:

  • Clearly defined school rules understood by all pupils
  • A consistent behaviour approach rooted in mutual respect
  • Visits from local services such as police, fire and road safety teams
  • Online safety education and clear anti-bullying procedures
  • Sporting opportunities that promote fairness and teamwork

Individual Liberty

Pupils are supported to develop independence, confidence and resilience. They are encouraged to make informed choices within a safe and structured environment.

This is demonstrated through:

  • Choice and challenge within lessons
  • Wellbeing support and opportunities for emotional expression
  • Teaching about consent, rights and personal boundaries through RSE
  • Leadership roles and responsibilities across school life
  • Celebration of individual strengths and talents

Mutual Respect and Tolerance

Respect is central to our school ethos. Pupils are taught to value others, resolve conflict positively and build strong relationships.

This is demonstrated through:

  • Restorative approaches to behaviour management
  • Buddy systems supporting younger pupils
  • Celebration assemblies recognising positive behaviour
  • Collaborative learning and team activities
  • Clear expectations for respectful language and conduct

Respect for Different Faiths and Beliefs

Pupils are taught to understand and appreciate diversity in modern Britain. Through curriculum learning and wider experiences, pupils develop empathy, curiosity and open-mindedness.

This is demonstrated through:

  • RE lessons covering a range of religions and worldviews
  • Visits to places of worship and visitors from faith communities
  • Celebration of religious and cultural festivals
  • Curriculum opportunities that reflect diversity and inclusion

Our Commitment

Through the effective promotion of British Values, Shevington Vale Primary School prepares pupils for life in modern Britain, enabling them to become confident, compassionate and responsible members of society.

Curriculum Intent

Our Curriculum provides pupils with memorable experiences, in addition to diverse and rich opportunities from which children can learn and develop a range of transferable skills and a strong personal voice.

A primary focus of our curriculum is to raise aspirations and engender a
sense of personal and team pride in achievement. We deliver a challenging and purposeful curriculum that helps every student become the very best version of themselves.

It moves children to:

'Rise Above and Go Beyond'
